Life Lessons

You may have thought I didn't see,
Or that I hadn't heard,
Life lessons that you taught to me,
But I got every word.

Perhaps you thought I missed it all,
And that we'd grow apart,
But Dad, I picked up everything,
It's written on my heart.

Without you, Dad, I wouldn't be
The person I am today;
You built a strong foundation
No one can take away.

I've grown up with your values,
And I'm very glad I did;
So here's to you, dear father,
From your forever grateful kid.

I Want to Be Just Like You

In a time when fathers are totally absent,
gone most of the time,
or physically present but mentally distracted,
you are there for me—
looking at me, listening to me
understanding me, talking with me.
You make time for me
even when it's inconvenient for you.
You make me feel important to you.

I learn from you when you teach me,
when I watch you do things,
and when I observe you
just being you—a terrific father.

Every affectionate smile you give me,
every pat on the back, every hug
shows me you love me,
that you're proud of me.

These are things I'll remember
to do for my own kids.
You're a great role model, Dad.
I want to be just like you.

Important Dad

Dad, when I fell and skinned my knee,
You chased away my tears;

You helped me through my fears.

When I was old enough to drive a car,
You patiently taught me how;
Your loving care was my guiding star;
You cared then, and you still care now.

So on Father's Day I'll say a prayer,
To thank the Lord that you were there.

Poetry on father contains a variety of messages, but this poem for Fathers Day in free verse was written for a pre-teen or teen. It's a poem on dad that has in mind all the fathers who have jobs--who leave each morning and return, dependably, each night.

A Real Father

It's not so common anymore
to have a dad who's really there,
who is the provider for his family,
who comes home every night,
whose predictability
creates a sense of stability and security
in his household.
Your routine may not seem valuable to you,
but it's worth a lot to me.
I'm thankful that I can depend on you
to always be you--
a real father,
responsible, trustworthy,
and a great role model.
I've learned a lot of good things
from watching you.
Thanks, Dad.

By Joanna Fuchs

Father poems are usually the same as dads poems. This poem for Fathers Day is a gift in itself. It's a poem on dad implying that the world would be a better place with more fathers like this.

If Everyone Had a Father Like You

If everyone had a father
Who was more like you,
There'd be more laughing, joy and singing;
Fewer people would be blue.

There'd be much more understanding;
Crime and hate could not prevail.
We'd all be so contented,
We wouldn't need a jail.

If everyone had a father
Who was more like you,
The whole world would be blessed,
Just as I am blessed with you.

Fathers on dock of glassy reflective lake surrounded by forest

Dad poems often describe kids' wish to be like their parents. This poem for Fathers Day lionizes dad, and expresses the wish to be like him.

Super Dad

I studied and watched you when I was a kid.
I knew you were special in all that you did.
You handled the problems that came, day by day;
Your brilliance came out in what you would say.

It defied understanding, I thought, every night,
Till one day I saw, and was amazed by the sight.
I finally knew what I was missing before:
You were hanging your cape on a hidden door.

You’re the very best man I ever knew;
I hope to be a super person like you.

Peerless Dad

For me you are perfect; you're wise and you're strong;
You loved me and taught me what's right and what's wrong.
For those reasons I love you, and to you I confide,

The adventure of life

To help her make right choices,

You made it easier to walk the right path,
I’m really proud you’re my dad.

Super Hero Dad

Dad you conquered problems, day by day.
All that you did just blew me away.
I tried to figure how you were doing it all.
What mystery power let you answer every call?

Dad, I found what I was looking for;
Your cape was hung behind a secret door.
I hope to be a dad Super Hero too,
To take care of my family, just like you.

First Father's Day Poem

So this is your first Father's Day,
Your first one as a dad;
Get ready for surprises now,
The wildest you've ever had.

Just when you think you've got it down,
There's a new and different stage;
This little person changes a lot
With each fascinating age.

Being a dad takes all you've got;
Your heart and mind you'll invest;
It's the hardest job you'll ever have,
And the one you'll love the best.

Father's Day Poem To Husband

Father poems don't always have to be from sons and daughters. A poem for Father's Day could be from a wife, for example. Fathers Day poems to husband tell how happy she is she married a good father.

The Best Man I Ever Knew

When we married, I saw you as perfect,
The ideal husband and more;
I thought I knew all about you,
All the things to love and adore.

But when you became a father,
I saw new qualities to treasure.
You enrich all our lives in fresh ways;
As a dad, you bring so much pleasure.

Our child/children is/are forever blessed
To have a father like you,
And I love you more than ever,
You're the best man I ever knew.

By Joanna Fuchs

Many people are searching for a Fathers Day song. As I've said elsewhere, the melodies for most familiar Protestant hymns are in the public domain, so I looked again to a Protestant hymnal for the melody for a Fathers Day song. This song has the essential ingredients for a good Father poem—love, respect, admiration—that should be included in a poem on dad.  You can use this poem of father lyric in a fathers day card, too, since it's a Father's Day poem. The melody is from the familiar hymn, “All Hail the Power of Jesus Name.” Note that there are two melodies with the same lyric, so be sure to look for the one written by Oliver Holden. As always, check for copyrights on recent additions to the original music, and if they exist, just don't use the additions; use the original melody. As is, this melody is not easy enough for little kids, so feel free to change a few notes to make it easier.

Essential Father

My dad is my role model for
Most everything I do.
I look to him to see what's right
He always gets me through.
(Repeat last two lines)

I hope my father knows how much
I love him and I care.
He is my hero and my rock,
My dad is always there.
(Repeat last two lines)

My father is essential to
My life and happiness.
My feelings are so strong for him,
My heart cannot express.
(Repeat last two lines)

There's so much more about my dad
That I would like to say,
But now I'll end by saying to you Dad,
Happy Father's Day.
(Repeat last two lines)

My Father Is A Christian

My father is a Christian;
He leads our household well;
With instruction from the Bible,
Right behavior he'll compel.

Yet he steers us with compassion;
His gentle love is true;
He conforms to our Lord Jesus,
So we know just what to do.

He teaches us with purpose,
Guides us in all Godly ways,
So we will take the right path,
And serve our Lord with praise.

I'm glad you're a Christian, Dad;
You help me see things clearly.

Free verse father poems have a variety of applications. Many thousands of people are typing Father's Day Prayer into their search engines, so I wrote this free verse father poem as a father prayer to be used at Father's Day events.

Father's Day Prayer

Lord, please bless our fathers,
these men who mean so much to us,
who are greatly responsible
for who we are and who we are becoming.
Bless them for having the courage
to do what's necessary to keep us out of trouble,
for making us do the right thing,
for helping us build our character,
even when it makes us angry;
and bless them for pushing us to do our best,
even when they just want to love us.
Bless our fathers for being our protectors,
for leading us through stormy times to safety,
for making us believe that everything will be all right
and for making it so.
Bless our fathers for quietly making a living
to provide for those they love most,
for giving us food, clothing, shelter
and other necessary and not so necessary material things,
for unselfishly investing time and money in us
that they could have spent on themselves.
Bless our fathers, Lord,
for saving some energy for fun,
for leading us on adventures
to explore the outer reaches of ourselves,
for making us laugh,
for being our playmates and our friends.
Bless them for being our secure foundation, our rock,
for holding on tight to us...until it's time to let us go.
Lord, bless these men we look up to,
our role models, our heroes,
our fathers.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
