What is Christmas?

by Helen Johnston
(England)

Can you tell me, "What is Christmas?"

Why we celebrate each year.
Can you tell me why give presents
To the ones we hold so dear.

Can you tell me "What is Christmas?"
Why the star upon the tree?
Can you tell me why the children
Play out the Nativity.

I can tell you what is Christmas,
Why the star upon the tree;
It's a symbol of that brightest star
The shepherds came to see.

I can tell you why give presents:
Because those three wise men
Gave presents to a baby boy
Whose life had just begun.

I can tell you why the children
Play out the Nativity:
It's so they know the genuine truth
Of how Christians came to be.

I can tell you what is Christmas:
It's a special time of year;
Its Someone's special birthday,
Someone who's always near.

Santa Brings More Than Gifts

by Mollie, age 11

Here's a Christmas message from an 11-year old:

Santa comes on Christmas eve,
To deliver to those who really believe,
Going through the frosty night,
To bring us joy and a wonderful sight.

Love and laughter is the best,
For Santa Claus and for the rest.
Christmas is more than a day in December,
It's a day for memories we'll always remember.

It's Christmas Time

by Marsha Vinson
(Brooklyn, NY)

Does this Christmas message capture some of the sights you enjoy and the feelings you treasure at Christmas? You could use this rhyming poem for a greeting card or note.

It's Christmas time, and how do I know?
'Cause lights are shining and cheeks are aglow.
People are shopping for those they adore;
The stores are dressed up so you'll shop even more.

Everything's brighter when Christmas is near;
More smiles occur, and they're ear to ear.
There's a light-hearted feeling that seems to abound;
That's how I know Christmas time is around.

It's Christmas time. Let us have fun!
Make this the best Christmas, second to none!

Christmas Celebration

by Gordon Wallace
(Northern Ireland BT25 1EU)

It was in Bethlehem, God’s love manifest,
An infant king, by the Father blessed.
The shepherds in awe, worshiped the child,
Who, as a man, would be gentle and mild.

We will celebrate,
We lift up our praise;
We will give our thanks
All of our days.
Our God above
Came down in love.
Angels proclaim:
Our Savior came.

Wise men from afar acknowledged Him king;
By the light of the star, their gifts they would bring.
For this is Immanuel, Isaiah did proclaim;
The Messiah has come; Jesus, his name.

So this morning we present God’s priceless gift to you;
He gave his precious son to bear what was our due.
A babe, he came to earth, a Saviour for us he died
He rose again and calls us with him to abide.

Christmas Happiness

by Verna Elliott
(Madison, Wisconsin)

Christmas is a happy time;
Lights! They sparkle, glitter and shine.
The air seems filled with warmth and glow,
Even if there's cold white snow.

What makes the world seem oh so right,
Filled with joy both day and night?
It's because we know of Christmas love,
Sent to us from heaven above.

This is what I wish for you:
May this Christmas bring you joy anew.
As you celebrate the savior’s birth,
I hope you feel great peace on earth.

The Christmas Star

by Gordon Wallace
(Northern ireland BT25 1EU)

The sun brightly shone; the sky was so clear;
Now night had drawn down; no clouds lingering near.
The twinkling stars from dark depths reaching out,
To capture the eyes of those out and about.

One star shone brighter than all of the rest;
It outshone them all; its light was the best.
From gaunt lonely hillside, to grand city far,
Inquisitive eyes, contemplating the star.

Now angels kept watch, as the poor shepherds went
Down off the hillside, curiosity spent.
In a dim-lit warm stable, midst cows and some sheep,
Where a tiny new baby lay there, fast asleep.

They worshiped the babe, of whom angels had said,
Little dreaming one day, He would rise from the dead,
The Father accepting the offering He’d make,
For repenting sinners, their punishment take.

Oh how could it be, that this baby so small
Could pay the whole price of sin for us all?
The blood-sprinkled sinners at Calvary kneel,
Their sins all forgiven, their destiny sealed.

Oh the love of the Father, His son to send down,
To a dark sinful world, no substitute found.
By the dear Son of God, the entire price had been paid,
Our sin from us taken, on Calvary laid.

Christmas Wouldn't Be The Same...

by Linda A. Bailey
(Jemison, AL. USA)

Christmas love poems are popular, so this Christmas message has wide appeal.

Christmas wouldn't be the same without you.
Candles wouldn't be as bright as before.
The angel on the tree, would be lonely just like me,
If you didn't come to meet me at the door.

Christmas wouldn't be the same without you.
The carols wouldn't sound as gay;
If I didn't know you'd come hold me,
Then christmas might as well stay away.

You've made my world a playground;
You've made me feel alive.
I thank God he sent you to me,
To share christmas by my side.

Christmas wouldn't be the same without you;
There'd be no need to hang the mistletoe.
If I couldn't kiss your lips beneath it.
Christmas time would simply lose it's glow.

Gods given me such blessings;
Now I can live my dream.
I know you'll be beside me,
A lovely christmas scene.

Christmas wouldn't be the same without you;
The world would be a dreary grey.
But since I know you'll come to love me,
My Christmas time will never go away.

My Christmas Gift

by Eugene Frimpong
(Kumasi-Ghana-West Africa)

From January down to December,
in our hearts one day though far, seemed near,
a day we need not chalk to remember,
and now that day is here,
for us to celebrate in happiness
with our family, friends and loved ones.
So as we celebrate this season,
giggling and laughing with our peers,
clinking glasses with cheers,
attending parties or Mass,
we tell everyone we meet
"Merry Christmas!"
I don't have fancy gifts,
but I send you much love,
because that is what this season is about.

Far Away From Family
On Christmas Day

by Erica Giacchetti
(Hillsboro, NH)

Here's a long-distance Christmas message, sent across many miles.

There are many miles between;
The road ahead is very long,
But because we can't be together
Doesn't mean we don't belong.

While you enjoy your feast,
And I am not there to share,
Please don't fret or be sad;
I can feel you in the air.

The bond we have between us,
Is stronger than any knot,
So every time you unwrap a gift,
Know I'm loving you a lot.

I see you in the Christmas tree,
Smell you in the pie;
Your spirit is all around me,
And our love will never die.

I have precious memories to treasure,
Of days we spent together,
So as I sit very far away,
Know you're in my heart this Christmas Day.

You Shine Brighter

by Michelle C.
(Phoenix, AZ, USA)

This affectionate Christmas message could also serve as a Christmas love poem.

There they are shining bright,
Twinkling throughout the night.
Here we are, across the room,
Listening to those jingling tunes.
It is then, I look up and see,
You shine brighter
Than any light on a tree
Could ever be.

Christmas Cheers!

by Lana Smith
(Grimsby, England)

This light-hearted Christmas message seems to be from an author free from holiday stress.

The holly's on the mantelpiece;
The gifts beneath the tree.
When the family comes around
So perfect it will be.

The carol singers at the door;
I go to get my purse.
I drop the turkey on the floor;
Who cares its Christmas, Cheers!

Christmas

by By Peter Larter
(Sydney, Australia)

This is the season we remember the birth of your Son
The one who cried "it is finished - it is done.”
But over time we have lost our way,
And Santa Claus is worshiped today.
The Christmas tree, presents and wine,
Family gatherings and feasts, we think are fine.
So forgive us Lord, our sinful leaning,
And restore to us, the season's true meaning.
That your dear Son came from above,
To forgive our sins and show us your love.
